The Pilbara Coast

We have just spent a couple of nights seeing the Pilbara Coast. We stayed in Point Samson the first night & Karratha for the second night. We checked out the towns of Roebourne, Point Samson, Wickham, Cossack, Karratha & Dampier while we were there. We have also now pulled up at Onslow to stay for a night.

We left Port Hedland with the intention to head to Karratha but instead we turned off & took the road up to Point Samson after stopping at Roeburne & going to the info centre. So pleased that we did as it was a nice little town & the Cove Holiday Park where we stayed had great facilities & even when I told them we had kids to pay for, the lady at the desk said "I didn't hear that!"
Once we un hooked & had some lunch we went for a walk & the kids on their scooters to the back of he park, went through the gate & down the path to the Honeymoon Cove Beach. We had a swim & a play on the sand. It was a nice little spot but there were rocks underneath that we had to be aware of.
Anyway, back for a shower & then we went for a drive around the little town. We went to the lookout, past the wharf & saw the Jetty that is used once again for loading ships with iron ore. There was also another little boat marina & boat ramp. Here are a few pics:
This is the Jetty from the lookout.

       Another view from the lookout.

                 The boat Marina

The beach we swam at but in this pic the tide is out. I didn't take the camera on our first walk there. The tides up here seem to go a Very long way out!

        Another view of the beach.

So, the next day we left Point Samson & drove through the town of Wickham. Its another little town that services mining workers & their families. We found these that kept us amused:

After Wickham we drove into Cossack. This town is full of history & it is no longer a full running town. There was like a heritage trail that you could do & there is some overnight accom in one building. We also had morning tea at a little cafe in the old post office. We also went to the lookout.

This is the place we had morning tea.

So from here we drove a while & got to Karratha but instead of stopping we headed straight to Dampier. We had a drive around this little town too. We were hoping to stay at the caravan park here but when we got there we decided that it wasn't for us. It was cheap to stay but the park was more of a transit park & because there wasn't all that much to do in Dampier we made the decision to stay in Karratha. Again Dampier is a small little town on the coast and acts as a service place for miners.
One thing we did check out at Dampier was the Red Dog Statue.

Back in Karratha we went to the info centre. We got some information & watched a short DVD on the rail track road. Trent also booked in to do a mining tour but not long after was phoned to say it was cancelled as there weren't enough numbers. He could have waited until the following day but we had to move on so he was just refunded. It was a shame though, would have been good.
Karratha is a bigger town, more like Port Hedland with more major services available. They also seem to be building more housing & apartments. They have a shopping centre too.

Today we have driven from Karratha to Onslow. We have seen a few of Rio Tinto's trains carrying the iron ore & took a couple of pics.

These trains are HUGE! They go on for miles! A great site to see!

We were told that Onslow was a pretty place by some other travellers but upon arriving here & having a look around its not a place we would recommend. Yet again a small little town that services miners. It has a jetty that is 1.3kms long  which loads salt. It has a school, small hospital, a supermarket, bakery, pharmacy, general store, fuel station & a few other services. Its right on the coast & the caravan park we are staying at is right on the water.
Later today we did take a walk along the 1km boardwalk which starts at the war memorial park. It was a nice walk & at the end you can get onto the beach. Kids had fun looking a shells.

After we got back we had showers, then dinner & its been a reasonably early night. We are hoping for an earlyish start tomorrow so here's hoping a good nights sleep for all of us. Being on the coast & of course a little lower down the coast too, we have stopped sleeping with the air con on & are opening windows for the fresh air at night. Its not getting as hot now, so I guess we are slowly making our way back home!
